4086, Activities/Attractions: Kalk Bay is a delightful fishing village on the False Bay coast, with a protected little harbour full of brightly painted wooden boats. Go to the harbour at around 1 pm to watch the fishermen offload their catch - you can buy your supper straight from the boat. The narrow main street is renowned for antique and art shops that make fascinating browsing. The well-known Brass Bell restaurant and bar is as close as you can get to the breakers without going for a swim. Boyes Drive takes you up onto the hillside for wonderful views of the harbour and in these hills lurk deep caverns and caves with a labyrinth of passages and chambers that are said to be haunted. Kalk Bay's small harbour is the scene of frenzied activity during winter, when the many independent fishermen who moor their boats here bring in and auction huge catches of snoek. Kalk Bay, 'lime bay', takes its name from the lime that was once produced here by burning shells in special kilns. The town is also renowned for the more than 80 sandstone caves that honeycomb the hills above the bay. Rich in architectural and cultural history, this place caters for any young free spirit searching to discover and experience alternative ways of life. Kalk Bay is a small harbor between Fishoek and Muizenberg. Originally founded and created by the Dutch East India Company in 1742. Over time the bay became a small fishing village inhabited by Philippine people seeking refuge from the anti Spanish riots of the time. Later the coloured people of Cape Town working on boats became very much part of the bay before and during apartheid. |
