Fort Massac State Park became the first official state park in 1908. The park provides picnicking, camping, hiking, boating, fishing, skiing and hunting within its 1,540 acres of beautiful Southern Illinois landscape. Every October, Metropolis draws over 100,000 visitors into town to experience the Fort Massac Encampment, which is the largest tourism event in Southern Illinois. With mock military battles, period costumes, fife & drum corps, traditional crafts, authentic food and more, the living history is truly amazing to see!

General Information: Welcome to Old Bethlehem School Cottage in the Metropolis area of Southern Illinois and enjoy hunting, hiking, horse or bike riding. For outdoor lovers, our out of the way retreat and farm is perfect for family vacations. The Old Bethlehem School is a one-room schoolhouse, in which classes were actually held until the mid-fifties. The entire schoolhouse is yours as there is no separate bedroom rental. It features:
